On July 8, former Spain international Fernando Llorente gave an interview, discussing his thoughts on the Euro 2024 semi-final between Spain and France, as well as his assessment of Morata and the new generation of Spanish players.
Speaking about Morata, Llorente said: “His performance for the national team has been remarkable, his stats are staggering. It’s rare to see a player of his caliber be criticized despite his form. His achievements are remarkable, but the criticism persists. As captain, he has been outstanding. He gives everything he has, every time he represents Spain. May he maintain this top form, because the team needs him. Hopefully, he can continue to shine, showcase his abilities, and remain resolute.”
Regarding France, Llorente stated: “I have full confidence in the Spain team. Their play is a joy to watch. However, Spain face a tough challenge as France are an opponent who won’t let you play. They play very dirty, are physically very strong, and are perhaps the toughest team to beat with our current style of play.”
Commenting on Mbappé, Llorente pointed out: “We have to give our all, try to control possession, that’s the most effective way to limit his influence, reduce the time he has to think. For top players, the less they think, the less dangerous they are. We need to stick close to him, and hopefully he’s off his game. He will always be a threat.”
Looking ahead to the new generation of Spanish players, Llorente praised them: “This group of players is exceptional. They are performing wonderfully and are at a very high level. Winning the tournament would be incredibly meaningful. They’re playing incredible football. We haven’t seen such a promising team since our generation. Their chances of winning are bright. Hopefully, their dreams will come true.”
On the transfer rumors surrounding Nico Williams and Barcelona, Llorente said: “The Euros have increased his visibility. He was undoubtedly one of the standout performers at the tournament. His dribbling ability and threat with the ball make him highly sought after. That’s why he’s attracting attention from many clubs. The release clause is a small amount for top clubs, it comes down to personal preference. In my opinion, he’s happy at Athletic Club and might decide to stay.”
Regarding Luis de la Fuente, Llorente praised him: “He is a Del Bosque-type coach, has worked at the Federation for many years, and knows the young players very well. I’m glad the Federation trust him. Despite a difficult start, dealing with pressure and facing doubts, he’s performed well.”
When asked about Jesús Navas, Llorente said: “He has a wealth of experience and has played in countless big games. I’m sure he can handle the challenge, especially against an opponent like Mbappé. It won’t be easy.”
