German Media: German Assistant Coach Angry at Referee Taylor, Stormed into Dressing Room

According to German newspaper “Bild,” witnesses saw Sandro Wagner, the German assistant coach, storm into referee Anthony Taylor’s dressing room after the Germany-Spain European Championship quarterfinal match. The situation escalated quickly.

“Bild” revealed that Wagner, angered by the lack of a penalty call for a hand ball by Cucurella, lost control and vented his anger at the English referee.

“Bild” detailed Wagner’s loud rebuke of Taylor in the dressing room. His anger stemmed from a controversial decision in extra time – a handball by Cucurella that was not given as a penalty. This incident sparked fury within the German team, particularly when Taylor refused to explain his decision afterwards, creating a tense atmosphere.

To avoid further conflict, Taylor and his refereeing team swiftly left the stadium in a black van. They departed the stadium at 9:47 PM, 80 minutes after the match ended.

German coach Nagelsmann addressed the incident at the post-match press conference: “For years, I’ve been trying to understand why certain fouls are given as penalties in similar situations and others are not. For example, in our game, if Musiala was passing the ball in midfield and Cucurella touched the ball with his hand, I don’t think that should be a penalty. However, the ball was flying towards the goal, and the Spanish player blocked its path with his hand. Even though it was not intentional, that doesn’t matter in the criteria, as the ball was indeed going towards the goal. In comparison, the penalty given against us in the game against Denmark was far less significant.”
