Nagelsmann on Cucurella’s handball not being given a penalty: “Anyway, we won’t get a replay”

Germany’s manager, Hansi Flick, has spoken about his team’s disappointing Euro 2024 quarter-final loss to Spain and his future plans, including a focus on the UEFA Nations League.

Flick said: “I held back tears because it’s all very moving. I’ve always said we need the support of our fans in this country. It’s been clear since March that the fans felt something. We made decisions that not everyone would have made, people felt we wanted to change things. When we see the videos of the fans, it’s very emotional. We would have liked to give the fans more.”

“The Nations League is a tournament we can win, and we should approach it differently than any friendly. We have important World Cup qualifiers in 2025, then the World Cup in 2026. We have big goals there. We want to use the Nations League to improve ourselves further.”

“In terms of ability, it’s very difficult to find a replacement for Kroos. You can only say Pavlović or Angelo Stiller, who can replace him in terms of playing style, and then there’s Gross, who’s already 33. From our point of view, we will successfully find solutions.”

“I will miss the people I’ve worked with over the past few weeks, I will miss the emotional moments. We’ve experienced all the highs, both positive and negative. From sadness and emptiness to the joy of the 89th minute, it was all there. I will miss the whole staff and team.”

“The bitter thing is that we now have to wait two years to try again in an international tournament. But overall, the job has been very fulfilling. I’m glad I extended my stay here.”

Regarding Cucurella’s handball not being given a penalty, Nagelsmann added: “Some players asked the referee, I don’t know if it was offside first. I have different information about why VAR didn’t review it, the situation isn’t entirely clear. I wish the referees would look at certain situations more carefully so they could better protect themselves from controversy and criticism. I’ve said yesterday what I wanted to change. Regardless, we won’t get a replay, so we move on.”
