Former French International: Griezmann’s Role is Unique, Team’s Poor Attack Can’t Be Blamed on Him Alone

With the European Championship semi-finals approaching, France’s vice-captain Griezmann may be facing the possibility of losing his place in the starting lineup. In response to this, former French international Roten has expressed that head coach Deschamps must continue to trust Griezmann, and the French number 7 shouldn’t, nor should he be made the scapegoat for the team’s lackluster attack.

Former French International: Griezmann’s Role is Unique, Team’s Poor Attack Can’t Be Blamed on Him Alone

In the first 5 matches of the European Championship, Griezmann has played in midfield, as the number 10, and on the right wing, but has yet to make a decisive impact. The team’s performance has been subject to criticism, even leading to calls to remove Griezmann from the starting lineup. However, RMC Sports commentator Roten believes that Griezmann is not solely responsible for the team’s goal drought.

In the RMC commentary program, Roten frankly expressed his views: “Should Griezmann be benched? I don’t think so, because we have no replacement for him. I also wish it were as simple as the problem being solely with Griezmann, but in reality, Rabiot, Tchouaméni, Kanté, and Camavinga in midfield are all known for their defensive capabilities. We’ve maintained a stable defense, but the lack of attacking efficiency can’t be blamed on the midfielders, the forwards also have a responsibility.”

Roten believes that France’s head coach Deschamps’ inconsistency in Griezmann’s deployment has exacerbated the issue: “If you can’t finish in the penalty area, or you hit the post with a corner, or you make a simple pass that allows your teammate an easy shot, these can all be attributed to level, ability, and talent. So all the forwards should be questioned, not just Griezmann.”

Roten continued, “Griezmann is part of the team, as are his teammates. The solution isn’t as simple as replacing Griezmann with Dembélé. We already saw this against Poland, once Griezmann came off, the attack completely lost its efficiency. So I have a question: Why doesn’t Deschamps insist on playing Griezmann in midfield?”
