On July 9th, on the eve of Spain’s Euro semi-final clash with France, Spain captain Rodri gave an interview, discussing the differences between Spain and Manchester City, and how to face France in the semi-final.
Rodri first addressed the topic of Manchester City: “If you think about traditional English football, you wouldn’t think of Guardiola. But to be successful in the Premier League, there are higher demands, you have to play a more dynamic, confrontational, and faster game. I wasn’t used to Guardiola’s football at first, I was a different kind of player. When a new player comes here and wants to adapt to Guardiola’s football, they need constant observation, learning and practice, his tactical system needs constant observation and understanding.”
Rodri previously stated that his position wasn’t noticed, so he couldn’t win the Ballon d’Or, he said: “I don’t play to win these individual awards, sometimes people suggest I play a football that’s more in line with the market and commerce, but that’s not my understanding of football.”
Rodri then went on to discuss the differences between the Spanish national team and Manchester City: “Spain and Manchester City have a similar football philosophy, but the coaches have different demands. In the Spanish team, we don’t need as much possession, our style of play is relatively more vertical than Man City.”
Spain faces France in the semi-finals, facing a depleted squad with Carvajal and Le Normand suspended and Pedri injured. Rodri commented: “This is undoubtedly a huge loss for Spain, but we have players who can replace them. We have to face adversity with greater unity, we will respond.”
