Italy, the reigning European champions, were easily eliminated from this year’s tournament in the round of 16 after losing to Switzerland. Italian legend Arrigo Sacchi has since given his thoughts on the matter.
Sacchi believes that blaming the defeat on coach Luciano Spalletti is unfair, saying: “Spalletti is a victim, he just had the courage to stand in this position.”
“He’s a very good coach, but unfortunately Italy doesn’t have a clear tactical system, while Holland, England, Brazil, Argentina they all do. We always want to outsmart the opponent, but Spalletti hasn’t had enough time.”
Sacchi continued: “There are too many foreign players in Serie A, when there are so many foreign players in the league, the national team’s performance will decline rapidly.”
