In an interview with the UK’s The Times, UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin said that the individuals and media who insulted England manager Gareth Southgate should apologize for “insulting and mocking England’s best ever manager.”
Čeferin expressed his anger and disbelief at the actions of some fans who threw plastic beer cups at Southgate after England drew with Slovenia. Čeferin expressed his support for the 53-year-old England manager: “In my opinion, Gareth Southgate is England’s most successful manager, but he has to endure such treatment after the game, which is shameful. Although the game was not perfect, England did not lose, but the manager was ridiculed and insulted. I hope some people in the media will apologize, although I don’t expect it.”
Looking ahead to the upcoming European Championship final, Čeferin said that Spain is impressive but England has been improving: “It will be a great final, in my opinion Spain have played the best football in this tournament, not just the young players, Rodri and Fabián Ruiz have been exceptional. On the other hand, England have very good players and I think they have been getting better and better from game to game, the team has gotten stronger.”
Čeferin also stressed that Euro 2024 is a successful tournament: “This has been a brilliant tournament, with great fans, great venues. Events like this are one of the things that can inspire people and make them feel patriotic again. The fans are traveling all over the place, enjoying football, and are always friendly to each other, which is fantastic.”
