Former England international Ian Wright has expressed his displeasure with the suspension rules in place at Euro 2024, with Spain set to be without several key players for their match against France.
Having knocked out host nation Germany in the quarter-finals, Spain have paid a heavy price, with Carvajal and Le Normand both picking up yellow cards that will rule them out of the semi-final against France. When ITV pundit Wright pointed this out, he expressed his discontent with the rule that yellow cards only get wiped clean after the quarter-finals.
Wright said: “It’s just ridiculous. It’s the fifth game now so you can get a yellow card in the first game, then another in the fourth game and then miss the semi-final. It’s too much, when maybe these players cool down, they realise they are going to miss the semi-final.”
On the other hand, Carvajal’s deliberate second yellow card, which saw him red carded, has also been a topic of debate, with questions being raised about whether he would miss the final if Spain were to progress. However, UEFA’s rules on accumulation of yellow and red cards only mention the “next match”, meaning that Carvajal’s tactic of getting a second booking was successful in “resetting” his yellow card record.
