According to Spanish media outlet Relevo and French newspaper L’Équipe, the two Euro 2024 quarter-finals, Spain vs. Germany and Portugal vs. France, set new viewership records for national team matches in both countries in recent years.
Data provided by Spanish television audience monitoring company Barlovento Comunicación shows that the Spain vs. Germany quarter-final attracted 11.7 million viewers, culminating in Spain’s 2-1 extra-time victory over host nation Germany. The final rating was 67.9%. When Merino scored the winning goal in extra time, the rating surged to 71.8%. The highest viewership for a Spanish national team game remains the Euro 2012 final, a 4-0 win over Italy, with a rating of 83.4%.
Meanwhile, French media audience monitoring company Médiamétrie reported that 12.7 million viewers tuned in to France’s Euro 2024 quarter-final against Portugal. This was the highest viewership for a France match in the tournament, but a significant drop compared to last year’s Euro. Viewership for the French national team has declined compared to the 2021 Euro, where the games against Germany, Hungary, and Portugal attracted 15.1 million, 12.3 million, and 15.6 million viewers respectively. The match against Switzerland, which ended in defeat for France, was watched by over 16.3 million.
