The Sun: Euro 2024 Final to Boost Spending as Fans Expected to Spend £120 Million on Booze

The Sun has reported that the Euros could provide a £800 million boost to the UK’s hospitality industry.

Sir Geoff Hurst, a member of England’s 1966 World Cup-winning team, has backed calls for a public holiday to be held if England beats Spain in the final this weekend, “to allow the country to celebrate together.”

Pubs across the country will be allowed to stay open later on Sunday night, as they were for Wednesday’s semi-final victory, to accommodate the crowds watching the final. Experts believe that England’s fans have already fuelled a £405 million spending spree in pubs and supermarkets after their semi-final win against the Netherlands.

It is estimated that England fans alone will spend £120 million on booze on the day of the final, with pub sales expected to be up by 10 million pints compared to a normal day. However, many fans may avoid Spanish beers, such as Estrella and San Miguel, to show their support for the Three Lions. Emma McClarkin, chief executive of the British Beer & Pub Association, said: “As with the semi-final, pubs will be able to stay open until 1am. This gives fans more time to enjoy the game, support our pubs, and hopefully celebrate ‘football coming home’ at the end of it all.”

Tesco, the UK’s biggest supermarket, estimates it will sell four million packs of beer and cider, as well as 1.2 million cans and bottles of low and no-alcohol beer. Nearly 2.5 million bottles of wine will be bought, and a similar number of bottles of champagne will be snapped up by England fans. Tesco also estimates it will sell over one million pizzas and pies, while nearly 800,000 packs of sausages and 180,000 burgers will be bought for barbecues. Andrew Rennie, chief executive of Domino’s Pizza, said the takeaway chain expects to make 20-25 pizzas every second during the game.

Analysts said: “The hospitality industry has enjoyed a £800 million sales boost during the four-week tournament and Sunday’s final will be the culmination of what has been a hugely successful Euros.”
