England captain Harry Kane hit back at critics in an interview with The Mirror on July 10.
Kane will lead England into their Euro 2024 semi-final against the Netherlands in Dortmund, where he has scored two goals. He has been criticised for his lack of goals compared to Netherlands striker Cody Gakpo, who has scored three.
“Hopefully, I can score a few goals against the Netherlands, then you’ll see things in a different light,” said Kane. “Like, ‘Kane is the top scorer, he’s got them into the final, he’s fantastic’.”
“If you look at the last few big tournaments, the media always have doubts about my fitness or form, but I know I’m ready. As the tournament goes on, I’ll get better and sharper in the final third.”
“People always judge me on goals, but my role is much more than scoring. I’m captain and I need to do things defensively, like tracking back, and my movement off the ball is important.”
