England will face the Netherlands in the semi-finals of the European Championship, and before the game, Manchester United legend Roy Keane has expressed his clear support for the Three Lions, saying that Saka’s excellent form is key to England’s chances of reaching the final.
On “The Overlap,” Keane clearly expressed his confidence in England: “I think England will beat the Netherlands and reach the final. I watched the Turkey and Netherlands game, so I think England will win. But once they get to the final and face a Spain team that’s in top form, it might be difficult for England. But let’s talk about that when it happens. The reason I’m supporting England is that the players and coaches are both mentally and physically recovered, and the whole team is in high spirits. This is the positive feedback that comes from winning games.”
Keane also pointed to one England player who he believes will be key to the Three Lions getting past the semi-final. Keane said: “Saka is at his peak, and the equaliser he scored against Switzerland was world-class. England’s form has picked up at the right time and they need to keep it going now. The players’ performance and Saka’s goal have been excellent. They have the players who can finish games. Even if it goes to penalties, the substitutes can get the job done.”
Keane used his experience as a player to prove why England are the better side: “If you play under Gareth (Southgate), let me tell you, things are looking good now. I never thought England would lose the semi-finals. No one remembers their bumpy path to the final stages. From my experience as a player, when we reached the final stages of a cup competition, maybe some teams who were better than us were eliminated, but we were still in the game. A few days ago we were discussing how well Austria played, but now they’re already home. That’s the nature of competitive sports.”
Interestingly, the former Manchester United captain, who is known for his “sharp tongue” and “boldness,” has mostly been encouraging and supportive of England in this European Championship. Apart from questioning Southgate’s use of Arnold, the rest of his comments have been a far cry from his usual firebrand rhetoric. England and the Netherlands will play their European Championship semi-final at 3:00am on July 11th at Dortmund’s BVB Stadion.
