Fabregas joined Rooney and Alan Shearer to further analyse England’s performance.
Why was England tactically inferior in the match against Denmark?
Fabregas: “I’m still trying to figure out what England are trying to do in each game. Spain have a clear plan, they’re very aggressive. It might succeed, it might fail, but at least you know what they’re trying to do. England are too variable, I’d like to see them be more confident going forward. I think Kane has lost the ability to press. You see other players, Bellingham, Saka, Rice all pressing, but if one person doesn’t do it, it ruins the whole game.”
Rooney: “I thought England were flat, lacked energy and there was not enough balance in the team. I also put the responsibility on the players. If Kane says he doesn’t know what to do after the game, it’s a problem, the players have to take responsibility.”
Shearer: “We have world-class players, the manager’s job is to get the best out of them. We saw that in the first 35 minutes of the first game. The second half of the first game, we didn’t have a chance. Yesterday’s game, we were poor. I think there’s no plan, they’re just lifeless.”
Is Southgate confusing the players?
Fabregas: “Every team has a game plan. If you’re telling me the striker doesn’t know what to do, it’s a problem. The most successful managers pay attention to the details. Denmark yesterday were good. The team I saw was ready for every game, you saw the game plan. There’s something clearly wrong with England.”
Rooney: “I think Southgate and Holland are putting a game plan together. Southgate now has an opportunity to reassess, hopefully he makes some changes and puts us back in a winning position.”
Shearer: “The England players seem confused to me, they don’t know when, how to attack, when to press. To me, that’s down to the coach. The opposition have had it too easy in the first two games.”
